When one thinks of architecture in Las Vegas, the mind and eye go to the famed Las Vegas Strip. Even before the towering edifices of today that make the Strip one the most visited tourist attractions on Earth at over 30 million visitors a year, the first generation of casinos still attracted more attention than the surrounding city. The architecture of the Sahara, Flamingo, Desert Inn, El Rancho were must flashier and even today- long after they have long been demolished- these ghosts of Las Vegas past still overwhelm in our imagination the buildings of the same era that remain in the Las Vegas Valley today.
The Las Vegas: Uncommon Modern project, which began in the fall of 2017, attempted to even the playing field a bit for the unsung historic buildings of Las Vegas. As The Strip was creating its own kind of architecture, what I like to call ‘the other Las Vegas’ was growing up around it. Neighborhoods and homes spring up just off Las Vegas Boulevard for casino moguls and housekeepers alive.
